Website optimization is an important part of developing a successful online business. In order to drive traffic to your website from the search engines, it’s important to optimize your website for relevant keywords and keyword phrases so that when a potential customer is searching for your product or service online it’s displayed at the top of the search engine results page (SERP). Here are six quick ways to help you optimize your site for Google:
Unique & Relevant Content
It’s true, content is king and if you want to improve your websites search engine ranking then unique and relevant content is a must! While it’s easy for Google to index your website it can be difficult to maintain the top position on the SERP for certain keywords because of the competition and since Google’s expertise is the search engine they take all necessary measures to improve the user experience by delivering relevant results (more on this below). It’s also important to note: publishing the same articles or blog posts to multiple websites doesn’t help your site, in fact it lowers the SERP ranking because the search engines will penelize you for duplicate content. So it’s very important to pay attention to the quality of content that is published on your website.
Keywords and Phrases
The quality of a websites content is greatly influenced by the keywords and phrases used. In reality, one of the most important steps in marketing your website is keyword research and should be one of the first things you do. After all, when people are searching for your products/services (keywords) online you want to be found, and preferably on page 1, or top 3, results of Google. Here you want to find the most profitable keywords to include on your site, so that would be keywords that have a high search volume with medium to low competition. Keyword phrases or “long tail keywords” are more effective than single keywords because there is a lot more competition on the web for single keywords than for similar keyword phrases. For example, if a website focuses on “virtual assistant services” then that keyword phrase must be included in several places in the content that is published on the website so that your business will be found. Most importantly, the use of keywords or phrases in the content should be natural and never be overstuffed or your website’s index rank will be lowered.
The Meta Title Tag
Every web page has an individual title tag with the title in it. This text is visible in the web browser. Googlebot uses this tag for determining the page’s content. This plays very important roles in the page rank calculation but does not affect the page rank solely. For distinguishing pages, these titles should always include important keywords and be different for every page across the domain, to avoid creating similar tags for different pages. The allowed length of the Meta title tag is up to 60 characters.
The Meta Description Tag
Although this tag doesn’t weigh as heavily into the search engine ranking algorithms it still plays an important part in optimizing your site for the search engines. Like the title tag, the text within the meta description tag is often displayed in the search results. So what you see in the search engine results page (SERP) right underneath the clickable title link is a description tag or a few sentences describing what the page is about. This is where you should compel people to click on your link by providing an accurate description of the page as well as a call-to-action. The meta description tag should be a 20-40 word summary of the pages content. Remember to make each description unique and include relevant keywords.
These tags bring the importance and highlight the content of a webpage in a domain. Header tags contain relevant keywords as per the description of the webpage. For every page, only one header tag is allowed and these tags are represented as bold block of text in large size. Therefore, Google’s algorithm uses these tags for detecting the focus of the individual web pages.
Link tags include anchor tags. Use of “read below” or ”click here” on the page make it difficult for Googlebot to separate them from the other important keywords and phrases present on the page. So, when you are creating links on your web site, you should pay attention towards the use of relevant keywords matching with the content on the website. Use of relevant keywords for anchor text is effective for optimizing your website. Moreover, as per Google’s guidelines, no more than hundred links are allowed per page on a domain.
The design and functioning of a website should be done with user’s perspective in mind but these six guidelines will help you in optimizing your website. Remember to keep adding relevant and unique content on your site and Google crawlers will check these pages frequently helping you increase the SERP rank of your website.
